What is a sex offender evaluation?

A sex offender evaluation is an evaluation process where individuals who have committed a sex crime, violent or not, are evaluated to determine the level of risk to the community and to determine the best treatment options and placement.

What does the evaluation include?

When evaluating a sex offender, forensic examiners look for risk factors that place an individual at a high risk for re-offending and who potentially may be a threat within the community. The risk factors are based on extensive research. Tests are administered as well to assist the examiner in understanding the underlying psychological processes of an individual. Tests such as the Rorschach, MMPI-II and the Hare Psychopathy Scale assist the examiner in understanding whether a particular individual posesses psychopathy and/or emotional behavioral symptoms that would increase their risk. Additional tests that measure sexual deviancy may also be used.

What is in the report? The report contains a social history, mental status examination and test results that detail extensively the personality make-up of a particular individual. It contains information from collateral information and some clarification and rationale is given to the courts as to why an individual may have offended a particular sex crime. For instance, an individual may have experienced a sex crime due to experimentation or an individual may have experienced a sex crime because they are a pedophile. A treatment plan for the individual is given and a diagnosis and confirmation of whether or not this individual meets the DSM-IV-TR diagnosis for a pedophile is given.
