The MCES/J-MCES Anger Management Assessment (AMA) and MCES/J-MCES Stress Management Assessment (SMA) are comprehensive forensic assessments designed to evaluate an individual’s ability to manage and regulate anger and stress, maintain emotional stability, and cope effectively in emotionally charged, legally relevant, or high-pressure situations. They can be administered as standalone measures or as supplemental components to the Mental Competency Evaluation Scale (MCES) and Juvenile-Mental Competency Evaluation Scale (J-MCES).
As independent tools, the AMA and SMA provide evaluators with a structured method for assessing anger management, frustration tolerance, stress tolerance, adaptive coping strategies, emotional control, and emotional resilience in forensic, clinical, or correctional settings. When integrated with the MCES or J-MCES, they offer additional insight into emotional, behavioral, and physiological factors that may influence competency to stand trial, courtroom composure and behavior, and decision-making under stress.
These assessments help identify underlying emotional factors—such as impulsivity, irritability, anxiety, emotional reactivity, and maladaptive coping—that can interfere with rational understanding and participation in legal proceedings or professional evaluations. The AMA and SMA can be used to guide individualized treatment planning, competency restoration strategies, and anger and stress management interventions.
Available in both print and digital formats, the AMA and SMA can be administered securely in person or remotely. Scoring results may be interpreted independently or integrated within the MCES/J-MCES system to provide a more comprehensive evaluation of emotional regulation, stress response, and competency-related functioning.

The MCES/J-MCES Anger Management Assessment (AMA) and MCES/J-MCES Stress Management Assessment (SMA) are specialized tools designed to evaluate emotional and behavioral control, anger management, and stress management in forensic and clinical contexts. They can be administered as independent assessments or as supplemental measures within the Mental Competency Evaluation Scale (MCES) and Juvenile-Mental Competency Evaluation Scale (J-MCES) competency evaluation systems.
The AMA and SMA provide evaluators with additional insight into the examinee’s emotional stability, coping strategies, and situational risk factors that may influence courtroom behavior, competency restoration, and readiness for legal participation.

Comprehensive Evaluation Areas
Assesses emotional regulation, frustration tolerance, impulse control, and behavioral stability to offer a multi-dimensional understanding of anger and stress expression and management.
Scoring & Comprehensive Interpretive Report
Scoring results are used to generate a comprehensive interpretive PDF report, offering detailed analysis and insights based on the scores and responses entered. An optional Word format report can be purchased separately.
Supplemental Assessments
If these assessments are utilized as supplemental scales with the MCES or J-MCES, they assist in assessing the client’s ability to manage anger and stress during legal proceedings. These scales can be integrated as weighted factors when assessing emotional stability. These assessments are included within the MCES/J-MCES kits and are also available as a separate purchase.
Administration Note: These assessments are recommended for use alongside the MCES-Standard, MCES-Exit, and MCES-Phase 2 assessments as well as their juvenile counterparts (J-MCES-Standard, J-MCES-Exit, and J-MCES-Phase 2).
Anger and Stress Management Evaluation
The MCES/J-MCES Anger Management Assessment (AMA) and MCES/J-MCES Stress Management Assessment (SMA) are structured tools designed to assess observable symptoms, behavioral patterns, coping strategies, and contextual stressors using a standardized Likert-based format. These measures assist evaluators in identifying potential barriers to competency, formulating individualized treatment goals, and supporting targeted interventions within both clinical and legal contexts, including integration within the Mental Competency Assessment & Training (MCAT) Program.
Flexibility in Administration
Available in both digital and print formats, the assessment allows flexibility for evaluators by accommodating various logistical needs, supporting both remote electronic and in-person evaluations.
Visibility of Assessment Questions
During remote electronic assessments, clients can directly view the questions, promoting transparency and minimizing misunderstandings. This approach ensures that clients remain fully engaged with the content being evaluated.
